Intex Inflatable Pools: Your essential buying guide
Measure the flat area where the pool will sit and leave space around it for getting in, drying off and supervision. Check both the inflated dimensions and water capacity, as a pool can look manageable online but still need a large, level patch of garden once filled.
Some larger inflatable pools are designed for family use, but comfort depends on the diameter, wall height and recommended occupancy. Look for sturdier side walls and enough internal space if adults will be sitting or cooling off in the pool.
Use a smooth, level surface free from stones, twigs and sharp edges. A compatible groundsheet or protective mat can help reduce abrasion, but it should not be used to compensate for an uneven or sloping area.
Check whether the pool has a drain plug and where it is positioned, as this affects how easily water can be released. For storage, the pool should be fully dry before folding to help prevent musty smells and material damage.
Smaller pools may only need an air pump and a safe place to use them, while larger pools can benefit from covers, repair patches, maintenance kits or water treatment products. Always match accessories to the pool size and manufacturer guidance.
Inflatable pools are a flexible option for warm-weather garden use, but the best choice depends on who will use it, how much space you have and how often you plan to set it up. Use the key points below to compare options before you buy.
Start by measuring the flattest part of your garden, patio or outdoor area. Allow extra clearance around the pool so people can move safely and so the inflated walls are not pressed against fences, furniture or sharp surfaces.
Check the inflated size rather than relying only on product images. Round, rectangular and oval inflatable pools can use space differently, so compare the actual dimensions against your available area.
For younger children, lower sides can make access easier, but adult supervision is still essential whenever water is present. For family use, look for a larger diameter, wider seating space and side walls that feel suitable for the intended users.
If you want a more robust garden swimming setup, it may be worth comparing inflatable pools with the wider swimming pools category to see whether another pool type better suits frequent use.
A pool that inflates quickly is easier to set up for occasional use, especially if it has separate air chambers or wide valves. Consider whether you already have a suitable pump or whether you will need to buy one separately.
Drainage matters too. A well-placed drain plug can make emptying simpler, while very small pools may need to be tipped carefully once the water level is low.
Inflatable pools are exposed to grass, paving, sun and repeated folding, so material thickness and seam construction are worth comparing. A pool used often may justify choosing a design that feels more durable than a basic occasional-use option.
Repair patches are useful for small punctures, but prevention is better. Keep the pool away from pets, sharp toys, gravel and rough ground wherever possible.
Empty smaller inflatable pools after use where appropriate and follow the product guidance for cleaning and water care. Larger pools may need more thought around covering, filtering or treating the water depending on the design.
Before storing, rinse away dirt and let the pool dry fully. Fold it loosely if possible and keep it in a dry place away from extreme temperatures and sharp items.
