Ice Hockey Sticks: Your essential buying guide
Flex is how much the shaft bends when you shoot. As a general starting point, many players look for a flex around half their body weight in pounds, then adjust for preference, strength and shooting style. A lower flex can help with loading the stick, while a higher flex can feel firmer and more controlled for stronger players.
Choose based on which hand you naturally place lower on the shaft, not necessarily your writing hand. If your right hand is lower, you usually need a right-handed stick; if your left hand is lower, you usually need a left-handed stick. Beginners may want to try both grips before comparing sticks.
A common guide is for the stick to reach around the chin when standing in skates, or roughly the nose when off the ice. Shorter sticks can support close puck handling, while longer sticks may help with reach and defensive play. The best choice depends on your stance, position and comfort.
Composite sticks are often chosen for lower weight, responsive shooting and a consistent feel, while wooden sticks can offer a more traditional puck feel and may suit players prioritising durability or budget. When comparing, consider weight, flex, blade feel and how often you play.
Blade curve affects shooting, passing and puck control. More open curves can help lift shots, while more moderate curves may feel versatile for passing and stickhandling. If you are unsure, start with a commonly used mid curve and refine your choice as you learn what suits your game.
The right ice hockey stick should feel balanced in your hands, suit your shot and support how you play on the ice. Use ShopSmarty to compare available options by construction, flex, handedness, blade shape and size before narrowing down sale finds.
Beginners often benefit from a forgiving stick that is easy to control, while experienced players may look more closely at kick point, weight and blade response. Your position can also influence the decision: forwards may prefer quick-release sticks, while defenders may value reach, strength and control.
If you are buying for a junior player, check both height and strength rather than age alone. A stick that is too stiff or too long can make passing, shooting and puck handling harder.
Flex is one of the most important specifications to compare. A softer flex can be easier to load for wrist shots and quick releases, while a stiffer stick can suit players who put more force through slap shots and one-timers.
Kick point describes where the stick bends most during a shot. Low-kick sticks are often chosen for fast release, mid-kick sticks for a more balanced shooting feel, and hybrid designs for players who want versatility.
Handedness affects how the blade sits when you hold the stick naturally. Always compare left and right options carefully, especially when buying online or replacing a stick from memory.
Stick length and lie influence posture and blade contact with the ice. If the blade heel or toe lifts too much during play, puck control and shooting accuracy can suffer. Look for product details that match your stance and skating style.
Blade pattern includes curve, face angle and toe shape. These details affect how the puck lifts, how passes receive, and how the stick feels when carrying the puck at speed.
Players who prioritise passing may prefer a more controlled, moderate curve, while those focused on shooting may compare more open or specialised patterns. If you are replacing a favourite stick, matching the blade pattern closely can make the transition easier.
Your stick should work comfortably with your gloves, protective gear and overall playing setup. Grip finish, shaft shape and length can all feel different once you are fully kitted out.
If you are building or refreshing your wider ice hockey equipment, compare sticks alongside the broader category so your choices suit the same level of play and frequency of use.
