adidas Hiking Shoes: Your essential buying guide
Focus on fit, sole grip, support, water resistance and overall comfort. A good hiking shoe should hold your heel securely, give your toes room on descents and provide enough cushioning and stability for uneven ground.
Hiking shoes are usually designed for rougher terrain, with more robust soles, stronger uppers and better traction than many casual walking shoes. Walking shoes can be ideal for pavements and lighter routes, while hiking shoes are better suited to trails and mixed outdoor conditions.
Waterproof hiking shoes are useful for wet grass, muddy paths and changeable UK weather. However, non-waterproof or water-resistant styles may feel more breathable in warmer conditions, so the best choice depends on when and where you plan to hike.
They should feel snug around the midfoot and heel without pinching. Leave enough space at the front so your toes do not hit the end when walking downhill, and try them with the type of socks you expect to wear on hikes.
Yes, many hiking shoes can be worn casually, especially low-profile designs with cushioned midsoles. Bear in mind that trail soles may feel firmer than lifestyle shoes and can wear differently if used mostly on hard pavements.
Choosing hiking shoes is about matching the shoe to your routes, weather and comfort needs. Use ShopSmarty to compare trail-focused footwear features side by side, from waterproof linings and grippy outsoles to cushioning and upper materials.
For muddy paths, loose stones and uneven tracks, look for deeper lugs and a sole pattern designed to shed debris. A flatter sole may feel smoother on compact trails, but it can offer less bite on soft or slippery ground.
If your hikes include rocky sections, consider soles with good edge stability and a protective toe area. This can help the shoe feel more secure when stepping across rough surfaces.
Waterproof hiking shoes are a sensible option for damp UK trails, wet grass and unpredictable weather. They help keep moisture out, although they may feel warmer than lighter, more breathable pairs.
For summer hikes or faster-paced walks, a breathable upper can be more comfortable. If you regularly hike in wet conditions, compare waterproof membranes, gusseted tongues and durable outer materials.
Hiking shoes should feel secure without being tight. Your heel should not lift excessively, and the shoe should support the arch and midfoot when walking over uneven ground.
Allow extra toe room for descents, as feet can slide forward on downhill sections. If you use thicker walking socks or insoles, factor that into the size and width you choose.
Lightweight hiking shoes can feel agile on shorter routes, while more structured pairs may offer better stability for longer hikes or rougher terrain. If you carry a daypack, added support underfoot can make a noticeable difference.
Cushioning should feel comfortable without making the shoe unstable. A firmer midsole can provide control on trails, while softer cushioning may suit gentler routes and all-day comfort.
Leather and suede uppers can offer durability and protection, while synthetic and mesh designs often reduce weight and improve breathability. Reinforced toe caps and heel areas are useful for stony paths and regular trail use.
If you want hiking shoes that also work with casual outdoor outfits, compare lower-profile designs in versatile colours. For more demanding hikes, prioritise performance features over styling alone.
