Osprey Hiking Backpacks: Your essential buying guide
For short day walks, a compact pack of around 10 to 20 litres is often enough for water, snacks and a light layer. For full-day hikes, many walkers prefer 20 to 35 litres to allow room for waterproofs, extra clothing, food and basic safety kit. Multi-day hiking usually needs a much larger pack, depending on how much gear you carry.
Key features include capacity, adjustable shoulder straps, a supportive hip belt, back ventilation, weather resistance, hydration bladder compatibility, external pockets and compression straps. The best choice depends on whether you want a lightweight day pack or a more structured rucksack for heavier loads.
A hip belt can make a big difference when carrying heavier kit because it helps transfer weight from your shoulders to your hips. For very small or lightweight hiking backpacks it may be less essential, but for longer walks or larger capacities it is usually worth considering.
Many hiking backpacks are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so they can cope with light rain but may need extra protection in heavy weather. A built-in or separate rain cover, sealed zips and dry bags for valuables can help keep your kit protected on wet UK walks.
A hiking backpack should sit close to your back without pulling you backwards. Shoulder straps should feel secure but not carry all the weight, while the hip belt should rest comfortably around your hips. If you are carrying more than a light load, look for adjustable back lengths or sizing options for a better fit.
The right hiking backpack should feel comfortable over distance, organise your kit well and suit the conditions you expect on the trail. Comparing size, support and weather-ready features can help you choose a pack that works for anything from local footpaths to more demanding hill days.
Start with how long you usually walk and how much you need to carry. Small hiking backpacks are useful for short routes where you only need water, a snack and a spare layer, while mid-sized day packs offer more space for waterproofs, lunch, maps and extra accessories.
If you are planning longer routes or carrying bulkier outdoor kit, look for a larger capacity with compression straps so you can stabilise the load. Avoid going too big for casual walks, as unused space can make a pack feel less balanced.
Comfort matters most once you are several miles into a walk. Padded shoulder straps, an adjustable sternum strap and a supportive hip belt can help spread weight more evenly and reduce shoulder strain.
Back systems vary from simple padded panels to ventilated mesh designs that improve airflow. If you tend to walk in warmer weather or climb steep routes, a breathable back panel may help keep the pack more comfortable.
A good hiking backpack should make essentials easy to reach. Side bottle pockets, zipped hip-belt pockets, lid compartments and front stash pockets can all help keep snacks, maps, gloves and waterproofs organised.
Some packs open only from the top, while others include panel access or lower compartments. If you like to keep gear separated, compare the internal layout as well as the headline capacity.
UK hiking often means changeable weather, so consider how well a backpack protects your kit. Water-resistant fabrics, coated zips and storm flaps can help in showers, but a rain cover is useful for heavier rain.
For phones, spare socks or insulated layers, using dry bags inside the backpack adds extra protection. This is especially useful if your chosen pack does not include a built-in cover.
Small details can make a hiking backpack more practical, such as walking pole attachments, hydration bladder sleeves, key clips and gear loops. These features are worth comparing if you regularly carry outdoor accessories or want quick access on the move.
If you are choosing between different types of bags, keep this category focused on trail comfort and load stability. Everyday bags may suit commuting or casual use, but hiking backpacks are designed around movement, support and outdoor organisation.
