Stihl Hedge Trimmers: Your essential buying guide
Corded hedge trimmers suit smaller gardens where a power socket is nearby and continuous power is useful. Cordless models offer more freedom of movement and are handy for gardens with multiple hedges, while petrol hedge trimmers are usually considered for larger plots or tougher trimming where extra power and longer sessions matter.
Shorter blades are easier to control for small hedges, shaping and detailed work. Longer blades can cover more hedge in each pass and help with wider or taller hedges, but they may feel heavier and less manoeuvrable, so balance reach with comfort.
Cutting capacity refers to the maximum branch thickness the hedge trimmer is designed to cut. For light annual growth, a smaller tooth gap may be enough; for thicker, woody hedges, look for a model with a larger cutting capacity and suitable power source.
Cordless hedge trimmers can be a good choice for many domestic hedges, especially for routine trimming and maintenance. Check the battery voltage, expected runtime, charging setup and whether the battery is compatible with other tools you already use.
Useful features can include a rotating rear handle for vertical cuts, anti-vibration design, a blade tip protector, dual switches for safer handling, and a blade length that matches your hedge size. Weight is also important, particularly if you will be cutting above shoulder height.
Hedge trimmers vary by power type, blade size, cutting capacity and handling, so it is worth comparing more than headline specifications. Think about the hedges you maintain most often, how far they are from power, and how comfortable the tool will be to use for a full trimming session.
Corded electric hedge trimmers are often a practical choice for compact gardens and regular light trimming, provided you can work safely within reach of an outdoor power supply and extension lead.
Cordless hedge trimmers remove the restriction of a cable, making them useful around larger gardens, front hedges and awkward areas. Compare battery runtime, charge time and whether the battery platform fits other tools in your shed.
Petrol hedge trimmers are generally aimed at heavier-duty cutting and bigger gardens, but they are typically louder, heavier and require more maintenance than electric options.
Blade length affects how quickly you can trim and how easy the tool is to control. A compact blade can feel more precise on small hedges and shaped shrubs, while a longer blade helps create straighter lines across wider hedge faces.
If you are trimming tall hedges, do not choose blade length alone. Consider the overall weight, balance and whether a long-reach or extendable design would help you work more comfortably from the ground.
The spacing between blade teeth gives an indication of the branch thickness a hedge trimmer is intended to handle. Fine, soft growth needs less capacity than older, woody stems.
Avoid using a hedge trimmer as a substitute for a saw on branches beyond its intended capacity. For thicker branches, it may be safer and neater to use a more suitable cutting tool before finishing the hedge with a trimmer.
Weight, handle shape and vibration all affect how tiring a hedge trimmer feels. If you will be trimming for longer periods or working at height, a lighter, well-balanced model can be more manageable.
A rotating rear handle can make side cuts and vertical trimming easier, while a front hand guard and two-handed operation help support controlled use. Also compare blade covers and storage options if space is limited.
Hedge trimmer blades should be kept clean and protected between uses. Some models may benefit from blade oil, sharpening or periodic servicing, depending on the power type and how heavily they are used.
If you already own garden power tools from the same battery system, a bare hedge trimmer body may be worth comparing with kit versions that include a battery and charger.
