Skullcandy Headphones: Your essential buying guide
In-ear headphones are compact and easy to carry, making them well suited to commuting, exercise and everyday use. On-ear headphones sit on the ear and can feel lighter than larger designs, while over-ear headphones surround the ear for a more immersive feel and are often preferred for home listening, travel and longer sessions.
Noise-cancelling headphones can be useful if you travel, work in shared spaces or want to reduce background noise without turning the volume up. When comparing models, check whether they offer active noise cancellation, transparency or ambient modes, and whether the design is comfortable enough for the length of time you plan to wear them.
For true wireless earbuds, consider both the listening time per charge and the extra power provided by the charging case. For over-ear and on-ear wireless headphones, longer battery life is helpful for travel, workdays and repeated use between charges. Fast-charging features can also be useful if you often forget to recharge.
Look for a built-in microphone, clear voice pickup and easy-to-reach controls for answering calls or muting where supported. If you take calls in busy places, compare models with noise-reducing microphones or call-focused processing, as these can help your voice come through more clearly.
For running, gym sessions or outdoor training, prioritise a secure fit and check the water or sweat resistance rating where stated. Earbuds with different ear tip sizes, ear hooks or stabilisers may feel more reliable during movement, while easy controls are useful when your phone is tucked away.
The best headphones for you depend on where you listen, how long you wear them and which features make daily use easier. Use this guide to compare the main choices before deciding which pairs are worth a closer look.
True wireless earbuds are popular for everyday listening because they are small, cable-free and easy to store in a pocket or bag. They are a practical choice for commuting, workouts and casual listening.
Over-ear headphones are better suited to shoppers who want a more enclosed fit and a fuller listening experience. They can be especially useful for travel, home working and longer listening sessions where comfort matters.
On-ear headphones offer a middle ground, usually with a smaller frame than over-ear designs. They may appeal if you want something lighter but do not want an in-ear fit.
Wireless headphones give you more freedom of movement and are convenient for phones, tablets, laptops and portable devices. Check Bluetooth version, pairing features and whether the controls are easy to use.
Wired headphones can still be a good option for low-latency listening, studio-style use or devices with a suitable audio connection. If you are buying for a phone or laptop, make sure the connector is compatible or that you have the right adapter.
Comfort is especially important if you wear headphones for work, study, gaming or long journeys. Look at the headband design, ear cup padding, ear tip options and overall weight when comparing products.
For earbuds, a good seal can affect both comfort and sound. Many models include different ear tip sizes, so it is worth checking what is included if you often struggle to get a secure fit.
Active noise cancellation is useful for reducing steady background sounds such as transport noise or office hum. Some headphones also include adjustable modes, letting you choose stronger cancellation or allow more outside sound in.
Transparency or ambient modes can help when you need to hear announcements, traffic or conversations without removing your headphones. This is worth considering if you switch between quiet listening and awareness of your surroundings.
Sound is important, but day-to-day convenience matters too. Compare battery life, charging method, case size for earbuds, app controls, voice assistant support and whether the headphones can connect to more than one device.
If you use headphones for calls, video meetings or gaming chat, microphone performance and control layout should be part of your shortlist. A great-sounding pair may not be the best choice if it is awkward to manage calls.
