Seagate Hard Drives: Your essential buying guide
Choose capacity based on what you store. Smaller capacities can suit documents and general backups, while larger drives are better for photos, video projects, game libraries and multi-device archives. It is usually worth allowing extra space for future files rather than buying only what you need today.
An internal hard drive is best when you want storage fitted inside a compatible PC, workstation or NAS-style setup. An external hard drive is more convenient for portable backups, moving files between computers or adding storage without opening the device. Always check the interface and physical size before comparing options.
These sizes refer to the drive form factor. 2.5-inch drives are commonly used in laptops and portable external drives, while 3.5-inch drives are common in desktop PCs and larger storage setups. The right choice depends on the bay, enclosure or external housing you plan to use.
For internal drives, SATA is a common connection to check for compatibility with the motherboard and drive bay. For external drives, look at the USB connection type and make sure it matches your computer or hub. The connection can affect ease of use and transfer performance.
Hard drives are widely used for backups because they can offer high-capacity storage for files, system images and media collections. For important data, consider keeping more than one backup in different places and check that your backup software or operating system supports the drive format you choose.
A hard drive is one of the simplest ways to expand computer storage, but the best choice depends on where it will be used and what it will hold. Use the points below to compare hard drives with confidence before choosing an offer.
Start with compatibility. Internal hard drives need to match the available bay size, connection type and power requirements of the computer or storage system. External hard drives should work with the ports available on your laptop, desktop or hub.
If you are replacing an existing drive, check the current drive size and interface before comparing alternatives. If you are adding storage, confirm that the device has a spare bay or that an external option would be more practical.
Capacity is usually the headline specification, but it should be considered alongside your workload. Documents and everyday files need far less space than raw photos, 4K video, game libraries or full-system backups.
If the hard drive will be used for scheduled backups, allow room for multiple backup versions. If it will store media, think about how quickly your library grows and whether you want one large drive or several smaller drives for organisation.
Hard drives can vary in speed, cache size and intended workload. A drive used mainly for archiving files does not need the same responsiveness as a drive used for frequent transfers or active project work.
For desktop storage, consider how often you open, copy or edit large files. For backup storage, reliability of the setup and enough capacity may matter more than outright speed.
Portable external hard drives are useful when you need to carry files between locations or store a backup away from the main computer. Desktop external drives may offer higher capacities but can require more desk space and a separate power supply.
For a drive that will stay in one place, a larger desktop-style option may be convenient. For travel, look for a compact format and consider how the drive will be protected in a bag.
Hard drives are a strong fit for bulk storage and backups, but they are not the only computer storage option. USB flash drives and memory cards are better for small, portable transfers, optical drives are for disc-based media, and external enclosures are used when you already have a compatible bare drive to house.
If you are unsure whether a hard drive is the right format, compare it within the wider computer storage category before deciding.
