Steve Madden Handbags: Your essential buying guide
For everyday use, choose a handbag that fits your regular essentials such as phone, purse, keys, sunglasses and a small pouch without being overfilled. If you carry a tablet, book or water bottle, look for a medium to large handbag with a wider base and organised compartments.
Leather and leather-look finishes can feel structured and polished, while fabric, nylon and canvas styles are often lighter and more casual. Suede offers a softer texture but may need more careful handling. Consider how often you will use the bag, the weather and how much maintenance you are comfortable with.
Top handles give a smart, classic look but are less hands-free. Shoulder straps are practical for commuting, shopping and busy days. If you want flexibility, look for a handbag with both handles and an adjustable or detachable strap.
A structured handbag with a secure closure, internal pockets and enough room for daily work essentials is a practical choice. Neutral colours such as black, tan, navy, cream or grey are easy to pair with office outfits, while a defined shape can help the bag look polished.
For evenings and occasions, consider a smaller handbag that holds only the essentials, such as a phone, cards, keys and make-up touch-ups. Look at details like chain straps, metallic finishes, embellishment, satin textures or compact structured shapes to complement dressier outfits.
The right handbag should balance style, comfort and practical storage. Use this guide to compare the features that matter most before narrowing down your options on ShopSmarty.
Handbags come in many shapes, and the best choice depends on how you plan to use it. Structured handbags create a neat, polished look and are useful when you want the bag to hold its shape. Softer slouchy styles feel more relaxed and can be easier to carry casually.
If you like quick access to essentials, consider open-top or magnetic-closure designs, but check whether there is a secure zipped section for valuables. For commuting or busy days, a zipped main compartment can offer extra reassurance.
Before choosing a handbag, list what you carry most days. A compact handbag may be enough for a phone, purse, keys and lipstick, while a roomier style is better for a diary, headphones, small umbrella or tablet.
Internal pockets, zipped compartments and divided sections can make a big difference. They help keep smaller items easy to find and prevent the main compartment from becoming cluttered.
Handles affect both comfort and styling. Short top handles look refined but are usually carried by hand or in the crook of the arm. Longer shoulder straps are more practical when you need your hands free.
Adjustable straps are useful if you want to change how the handbag sits against your body. Detachable straps add versatility, letting one bag work for smarter occasions and more casual days.
Material influences the look, weight and care needs of a handbag. Smooth finishes can feel smart and minimal, textured finishes can be more forgiving for everyday wear, and fabric options often suit relaxed styling.
Consider lining quality, stitching and hardware as well as the outer material. Strong zips, secure clasps and neatly finished seams can make a handbag feel more reliable in daily use.
A handbag can either blend into your wardrobe or act as a focal point. Neutral shades are easy to wear frequently, while bold colours, metallics and prints can refresh simple outfits.
If you are building a coordinated look, compare your handbag with other accessories such as belts, scarves, jewellery and shoes. Matching every detail is not essential, but considering colour tone and hardware finish can help the outfit feel cohesive.
