OutsunnyHammocks: Your essential buying guide
For most UK gardens, a hammock with a stand is the easiest option because it does not rely on suitable trees or fixed posts. If you already have strong, well-spaced supports, a traditional hanging hammock can work well. Consider quick-drying fabric and easy storage if it will be used in changeable weather.
You need a stand if you do not have two secure anchor points at the right distance and height. Freestanding hammocks are more flexible because they can be moved around a patio, lawn or deck, while fixed hammocks can feel neater if you have a dedicated lounging spot.
Choose a single hammock for one person and a larger double hammock if you want more room to stretch out or share. Check the total length, bed width and maximum supported weight, then compare those measurements with the space available in your garden.
Cotton feels soft and comfortable, making it good for relaxed lounging, but it may need more care if it gets wet. Polyester or mixed outdoor fabrics are often more practical for garden use because they are typically easier to dry and clean. Always check the product care guidance before leaving any hammock outside.
Some hammocks and stands are designed for outdoor use, but it is still sensible to protect them from prolonged rain, strong sun and winter conditions. Removable fabric hammocks are usually best stored indoors or in a dry garden storage area when not in use.

A good hammock should suit your outdoor space, feel comfortable to lie in and be easy to set up when you want to relax. Before comparing styles, think about where it will go, how often you will use it and whether you need a fully freestanding design.
Traditional hanging hammocks need two secure fixing points, such as suitable trees, posts or a purpose-built frame. They can be a good choice if you have a dedicated spot and want a simple fabric hammock that can be taken down between uses.
Freestanding hammocks include their own stand, making them useful for patios, lawns and gardens without mature trees. Check the stand footprint as well as the hammock length, as the full setup can take up more space than the fabric bed alone.
Compare the lying area, overall length and maximum user weight before buying. A hammock that is too short or narrow can feel restrictive, while an oversized frame may dominate a small garden or balcony-style space.
For comfort, look at how the hammock supports your body. Spreader-bar hammocks sit more open and flat, while gathered-end designs wrap around the user more closely. The right choice comes down to whether you prefer a flatter recline or a cocoon-like feel.
Fabric choice affects both comfort and maintenance. Soft woven materials feel inviting for lounging, while outdoor-focused synthetics may be easier to wipe down and dry after light moisture.
Frames can be made from metal or wood, and both need appropriate care. Look for finishes intended for outdoor use and follow the care instructions, especially if the hammock will sit on grass, decking or a paved patio through the warmer months.
Measure the intended area before comparing hammocks, leaving enough clearance around the sides for gentle movement. A flat, stable surface is especially important for freestanding stands, while hanging hammocks need properly spaced and secure anchor points.
Consider shade, privacy and how the hammock fits with the rest of your garden furniture. A spot near a patio or seating area can make it feel part of your outdoor living space, while a quieter corner is better for reading and napping.
If you only use your hammock on sunny days, a removable fabric design may be the most convenient. You can attach it when needed, then store it dry to help keep it clean and comfortable.
For heavier stands, check whether the frame can be dismantled or moved easily. This matters if you need to clear space for other garden furniture, protect the hammock in winter or store it between seasons.
