Olaplex Hair Masks: Your essential buying guide
Start with your main concern. Dry or coarse hair often suits richer moisturising masks, while fine hair may need a lighter formula that will not feel heavy. Colour-treated or bleached hair may benefit from masks aimed at strengthening, smoothing or protecting the look of processed lengths.
A conditioner is usually used after most washes to soften and detangle. A hair mask is typically a more intensive treatment used less often, with a richer texture or more targeted formula for concerns such as dryness, frizz, breakage, dullness or damage.
Usage depends on your hair and the product instructions. Many shoppers use a mask weekly or whenever hair feels dry, rough or stressed. Fine or oily hair may prefer occasional use, while very dry, curly or chemically treated hair may suit more regular masking.
Choose a moisturising mask if your hair feels dry, frizzy or dull. Consider a protein or strengthening mask if your hair feels weak, over-processed or prone to snapping. Some routines alternate between both, but it is best to follow the product guidance and avoid overloading fine or fragile hair.
Hair masks can be useful in a colour-care routine, especially when hair feels dry or rough after colouring or bleaching. Look for masks that mention colour-treated, bleached or damaged hair, and check whether the formula focuses on moisture, shine, smoothing or bond-style repair support.
The best hair mask for you depends on your hair texture, styling habits and the result you want after rinsing. Compare the treatment focus, formula weight and application time before choosing.
For dryness, look for masks described as moisturising, hydrating or nourishing. These are often chosen for hair that feels rough, dull or hard to detangle.
For damage, breakage or heavily styled hair, compare masks that focus on strengthening, repair or resilience. If your hair is colour-treated or bleached, check that the product is suitable for processed hair.
Thick, curly or coarse hair may suit richer creams and butters that give a more intensive feel. Fine or flat hair usually needs a lighter mask, applied mainly through the mid-lengths and ends to avoid weighing down the roots.
If your hair gets greasy quickly, compare rinse-out masks and check the suggested use time. If your ends are dry but roots are oily, a targeted application can be more suitable than coating the whole head.
Most hair masks are used after shampooing and before or instead of conditioner, but instructions vary. Compare leave-on time, rinse requirements and whether the product is intended for weekly use or more frequent treatment.
If you are building a fuller haircare routine, it can help to compare masks alongside other hair products so each step works together rather than duplicating the same benefit.
Ingredient preferences can guide your shortlist. Some shoppers look for oils, butters, keratin-style strengthening claims or bond-focused wording, while others prefer silicone-free, sulphate-free or vegan-labelled formulas where stated by the seller or brand.
Always check the product description if you have sensitivities, a specific scalp concern or a hair extension, wig or colour-care routine that needs compatible products.
Hair masks come in tubs, tubes, sachets and treatment packs. A larger tub may suit regular use on long or thick hair, while a smaller size can be useful for trying a formula before committing.
When comparing options on ShopSmarty, consider how much product you are likely to use per treatment, the recommended frequency and whether the mask is for all-over use or mainly for lengths and ends.
