Gutters: Your essential buying guide
Match the gutter profile, size and material to your existing system where possible. Common choices include half-round, square and deep-flow guttering, with deeper profiles often considered where a roof has a larger surface area or more water to manage.
Check the width, depth and profile of your current gutter, plus the diameter of any connected downpipes. If you are replacing a full run, consider the roof area, fall direction and outlet positions before choosing a compatible system.
Plastic guttering is widely used for domestic repairs because it is lightweight and available in many profiles. Metal guttering can suit certain period, exposed or design-led projects, but you should compare finish, fixing method, maintenance needs and compatibility before buying.
A typical gutter project may need unions, stop ends, running outlets, angles, brackets and downpipe connections. Measure the run carefully and check how corners, joins and outlets will be arranged before selecting fittings.
Only if the new parts are compatible with the existing profile, size and jointing system. Even similar-looking guttering can differ slightly, so compare product specifications carefully before mixing brands or ranges.
Gutters are a small part of the roofline, but choosing the right system matters for directing rainwater away from walls, fascias and foundations. Use ShopSmarty to compare guttering by practical fit, material and the fittings needed for your project.
Start by identifying the profile you need, such as half-round, square, ogee or deep-flow. If you are replacing a damaged section, the new gutter should match the existing shape closely so joints and brackets fit correctly.
For a full replacement, compare profiles based on the look of your property, the roof area and the amount of rainwater the system needs to carry.
Measure the gutter width, depth and length required, allowing for corners, joins and outlet points. Downpipe size is just as important, as outlets and connectors need to align with the pipework below.
If you are replacing only part of a system, compare the manufacturer’s measurements rather than relying on appearance alone.
Plastic guttering is commonly chosen for straightforward domestic repairs and replacements, while metal options can be suitable for specific architectural styles or more traditional rooflines.
Colour also matters. Black, white, brown and grey finishes can each change the look of the roof edge, so compare guttering against fascias, soffits, brickwork and exterior trim.
Gutter lengths are only one part of the system. You may also need brackets, unions, angles, stop ends, running outlets and downpipe adaptors.
Sketch the run before comparing products, marking where the water will flow, where the downpipe will sit and where corners or joins are required.
Gutter work often sits alongside fascia, roof edge or general exterior maintenance. If your project involves more than a simple gutter swap, compare the wider tools, fixings and materials needed before starting.
This can help you avoid choosing guttering that fits the opening but not the overall repair plan.
