Grates: Your essential buying guide
Start with your grill’s size and shape, then check the cooking area and fixing style. A good fit matters most, so measure the old grate or the space inside your BBQ before you buy. You should also think about how you cook, as different bar layouts can suit direct grilling, smaller ingredients or steadier heat control.
Common options include cast iron, stainless steel and plated metal. Cast iron can hold heat well and give strong searing, while stainless steel is often chosen for easy maintenance and rust resistance. Plated options can be a more budget-friendly choice, but it is worth checking care instructions so you know how to keep the grate in good condition.
Measure the width and depth of the cooking area, or the old grate if you already have one. If the grate sits in sections, measure each piece separately. It helps to note the shape, any cut-outs and how the grate rests in the BBQ so you can compare like for like before ordering.
Yes, a well-matched replacement grate can help restore even contact with the heat source and make cooking more consistent. If your current grate is warped, heavily worn or difficult to clean, a new one can improve how food cooks and how easy the BBQ is to use.
Brush them after each use while they are still warm, then remove any residue once they have cooled. Dry them thoroughly before storing to help reduce rust, especially with cast iron or plated finishes. If your grate needs seasoning or specialist care, follow the manufacturer’s guidance so you can keep it performing well.
Choosing the right grate can make a big difference to how your BBQ cooks and how easy it is to maintain. The best option depends on fit, material, cooking style and how much care you want to give it over time. Use the points below to compare grates and find a practical match for your outdoor cooking setup.
A grate needs to match your BBQ’s cooking area properly, so start with accurate measurements. Check the width, depth and any shape details such as rounded corners, support lips or sectioned panels.
If you are replacing an existing grate, compare the old one with the new product listing carefully. Even small differences in size or fixing style can affect how securely it sits in place.
Cast iron is often favoured for strong heat retention and good searing, which can be useful for steaks and burgers. Stainless steel is a practical option if you want something that is generally easier to maintain and less demanding after cooking.
Plated grates can offer a simpler replacement route, especially if you are looking for a more affordable refresh. Whichever material you pick, think about how often you use your BBQ and how much upkeep you are happy to do.
Different grate designs can suit different meals. Narrower bars or tighter spacing may be helpful for smaller ingredients, while a sturdier grate can feel better suited to larger cuts and regular high-heat cooking.
If you like to sear food quickly, look for a grate that supports firm contact with the heat. For more varied outdoor cooking, choose a design that feels versatile and easy to use across different dishes.
A grate that is easier to clean can save time after cooking. Smooth finishes and wipe-down friendly materials may suit shoppers who want simple maintenance, while cast iron may need a little more care to stay in good shape.
Regular brushing, drying and sensible storage all help extend the life of a grate. If you cook often, it is worth choosing a model that fits your cleaning routine rather than one that looks good but is awkward to look after.
Some BBQs use one-piece grates, while others rely on sections or modular parts. Make sure you know which format your grill needs before ordering, as the wrong layout may not sit correctly or cover the cooking area evenly.
If you are upgrading a worn grate, check whether the rest of the BBQ still provides solid support. A new grate works best when it is paired with a cooking setup that is stable and properly sized.
