Wacom Graphics Tablets: Your essential buying guide
A standard graphics tablet is usually a flat input surface that connects to a computer, so you draw on the tablet while looking at your monitor. A display tablet has a built-in screen, letting you draw directly on the image. Screen models can feel more natural, while non-screen tablets are often simpler and can take up less desk space.
Smaller graphics tablets are easier to carry and can work well for quick edits, note-taking and limited desk space. Medium and large tablets give you more room for sweeping strokes, illustration and detailed design work. Match the active drawing area to your monitor size, hand movement and the type of work you do most often.
Yes, pressure sensitivity affects how naturally your strokes respond when drawing, shading or editing. Higher sensitivity can give finer control over line weight and opacity, but the overall pen feel, software support and your own drawing style are just as important.
Check the tablet’s operating system support, connection type and driver requirements before buying. Many graphics tablets connect by USB, while some offer wireless options, but compatibility can vary by model and software. Also make sure your preferred creative apps support pen input features such as pressure and tilt where needed.
Compare active area, stylus type, pressure sensitivity, tilt support, shortcut keys, connection options, stand or screen features if included, and compatibility with your computer and software. If you work for long sessions, also consider ergonomics, cable layout and whether the tablet will fit comfortably on your desk.
The right graphics tablet should feel comfortable, accurate and well matched to your creative software. Use the sections below to compare the features that make the biggest difference for drawing, editing and design.
A pen tablet is a separate drawing surface that controls the cursor on your computer screen. It can be a practical choice if you already have a good monitor and want a compact, straightforward input device.
A display tablet lets you draw directly on a built-in screen. This can be more intuitive for illustration and retouching, but you should compare screen size, resolution, colour support, stand options and the connections your computer needs.
The active area is the part of the tablet that responds to the pen. A smaller active area can suit travel, note-taking and light photo edits, while a larger one gives more space for broad hand movements and detailed artwork.
Think about how you draw. If you sketch from the wrist, a compact tablet may feel fine. If you use your whole arm for long strokes, a larger surface is likely to feel more comfortable.
Look at pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition and how the stylus is powered. These details affect line control, shading and the overall drawing feel.
Shortcut buttons, touch strips and on-tablet controls can speed up common actions such as undo, brush size changes and zooming. They are especially useful if you work in creative software for long periods.
Before you buy, confirm that the graphics tablet supports your operating system, preferred creative apps and available ports. Some models require specific drivers, so it is worth checking setup requirements in advance.
If you are improving a wider desk setup, compare related peripherals such as monitors, keyboards and mice separately so the tablet fits naturally into your workflow.
A graphics tablet should sit at a comfortable angle and leave enough room for your keyboard, mouse and monitor. For display tablets, check whether a stand is included or whether you need a separate adjustable option.
Cable placement, tablet weight and surface texture can all affect day-to-day use. If you draw for long sessions, prioritise a layout that reduces strain and keeps your hand movements natural.
