Ping Golf Bags: Your essential buying guide
Choose a stand bag if you regularly carry your clubs, a cart bag if you mainly use a trolley or buggy, and a travel bag if you need protection for transporting clubs. A pencil bag can suit quick rounds with fewer clubs, while a tour-style bag is best for maximum storage rather than easy carrying.
Club dividers help keep shafts separated and make clubs easier to find during a round. Full-length dividers offer better organisation and can reduce tangling, while smaller divider systems are usually lighter and simpler.
A waterproof or water-resistant golf bag is worth considering if you play regularly in wet UK conditions. Look for sealed zips, waterproof materials and a rain hood if you want better protection for clubs, grips, clothing and accessories.
For carrying, prioritise low weight, padded dual straps, a comfortable back pad and stable stand legs. Enough pockets for balls, tees, waterproofs and valuables are useful, but too much storage can encourage extra weight.
Many golf bags can be used on a trolley, but cart bags are designed for a more secure fit with forward-facing pockets and trolley-friendly bases. If you already use a trolley, check the bag base, strap pass-through and pocket access before choosing.
A good golf bag should suit the way you move around the course and keep your clubs, balls, clothing and accessories easy to access. Use ShopSmarty to compare golf bags by style, storage, weight and weather protection so you can narrow down options with confidence.
If you walk most rounds, a stand bag is usually the most practical choice because it balances storage with portability. Look for a stable stand mechanism, comfortable straps and a weight you can carry for 18 holes.
If you use a trolley or buggy, a cart bag gives you more storage and easier pocket access while secured in place. These bags are generally larger, so consider how much space you need for waterproofs, drinks, spare balls and accessories.
Pocket layout can make a big difference during a round. Useful features include a valuables pocket, insulated drink pocket, apparel pocket, ball pocket, tee holders and an umbrella sleeve.
Club dividers are also worth comparing. More dividers can make a bag feel neater and help with quick club selection, while fewer dividers can keep the bag lighter and less bulky.
For carry bags, shoulder strap design is one of the most important details. Padded double straps can spread weight more evenly, while a single strap may suit shorter rounds or lighter pencil bags.
A padded hip or back section can improve comfort, especially if you carry extra clothing or accessories. Also check grab handles, as they make lifting the bag in and out of a car or locker easier.
UK golf often means changeable conditions, so consider how well the bag protects your kit. Water-resistant fabrics, sealed seams, covered zips and an included rain hood can all help keep contents drier.
If you regularly play in heavy rain, a waterproof golf bag may be more suitable than a standard fabric model. If you only play occasionally in poor weather, a lighter water-resistant option may be enough.
A full set of clubs, extra layers, balls, gloves and accessories needs a different bag from a quick nine-hole setup. Before comparing options, think about what you genuinely carry every round.
If your kit includes additional training aids or bulky waterproofs, a larger cart bag may be easier to live with. If you prefer a stripped-back setup, a lighter stand or pencil bag can be more convenient.
