CostwayGarden Parasols: Your essential buying guide
Match the canopy size to the area you want to shade. A smaller round or square parasol can suit a balcony, bistro set or two chairs, while a larger canopy is better for outdoor dining tables or lounge seating. Check both the open canopy width and the available clearance around your furniture.
A centre-pole parasol has the pole through the middle, making it a straightforward choice for tables with a parasol hole or compact seating areas. A cantilever parasol has an offset pole, so the canopy can sit over furniture without the pole being in the centre of the space.
Many garden parasols need a suitable weighted base or stand, and this is especially important for larger canopies and cantilever designs. Always check the pole diameter, recommended base weight and whether the base is included before comparing options.
A tilting parasol can be useful if your seating area gets sun from different angles during the day. It lets you angle the canopy without moving the whole parasol, which can be helpful for dining, reading or relaxing outdoors.
Consider the canopy material, colour, venting and whether it is described as water-resistant or UV-protective. Darker colours can feel bolder and may show marks differently, while lighter shades can help keep a brighter look in smaller gardens.

A garden parasol is one of the simplest ways to create shade where you need it. The right choice depends on your outdoor layout, the furniture you want to cover and how often you plan to adjust it.
Centre-pole parasols are a practical option for many garden tables and smaller seating areas. They are easy to position, especially when the table has a central parasol hole.
Cantilever parasols are better when you want shade over a sofa set, lounger or dining area without a pole interrupting the middle of the furniture. They usually need more floor space and a sturdier base.
Check the width and depth of the space you want to shade, not just the size of the furniture. A canopy that is too small may leave seats exposed, while one that is too large can feel awkward on a narrow patio or balcony.
Remember to allow room for opening, closing and tilting the parasol. For cantilever designs, also consider the footprint of the base and the arc of any rotating or adjustable arm.
A crank handle can make larger parasols easier to open and close. Push-up designs are often simpler, but may be less convenient if the canopy is large or positioned over a table.
Tilt and rotation features are useful if you need shade at different times of day. If your garden gets strong afternoon sun, an adjustable canopy can make the seating area more comfortable without moving everything around.
The base is just as important as the canopy. Compare the parasol pole diameter, recommended base weight and whether the stand is supplied or needs to be bought separately.
Larger parasols, offset designs and exposed garden positions usually need heavier support. If you already own a base, confirm the fit before choosing a new parasol.
Canopy fabric, pole material and frame finish all affect how a parasol looks and feels in your garden. Aluminium frames can offer a modern look, while wooden poles can suit more traditional outdoor furniture.
Colour also matters. Neutral shades are easy to coordinate with garden furniture, while brighter colours can make the parasol a focal point on a patio or lawn.
