Razer Gamepads: Your essential buying guide
Check compatibility with your device first, then compare wired or wireless connectivity, layout, size, battery type, trigger feel, vibration support and whether the controller has extra buttons or customisation options.
A wired gamepad can suit shoppers who want a simple connection and do not want to think about charging. A wireless gamepad is better if you prefer playing from the sofa or want fewer cables, but you should compare battery life and charging method.
Some gamepads work across multiple platforms, but support varies by model. Always check whether the pad is listed for your console, Windows PC, handheld, tablet or phone, and whether any adaptor, app or cable is required.
Rear buttons or paddles can be useful for competitive games because they let you keep your thumbs on the sticks while triggering actions. For casual play, a standard layout may be simpler and better value.
Comfort usually comes down to grip shape, weight, stick placement, trigger reach and surface texture. If you have smaller or larger hands, compare dimensions and layout carefully rather than choosing on looks alone.
The best gamepad for you depends on where you play, how you connect and the types of games you enjoy. Use the points below to compare practical features before choosing a controller.
Start by matching the gamepad to your main device. Console-specific pads are often the safest choice for that system, while PC-focused gamepads may offer broader support through USB, Bluetooth or wireless dongles.
If you plan to switch between devices, look for clear multi-platform compatibility. Pay attention to whether all features work everywhere, as vibration, audio ports, motion controls or button mapping can vary by platform.
Wired gamepads are straightforward, often lighter and do not need charging. They can be a sensible pick for desk gaming, shared setups or players who prefer a plug-in connection.
Wireless gamepads give you more freedom to sit back, but it is worth comparing battery type, charging connection and whether the controller uses Bluetooth or a dedicated receiver.
Gamepads can feel very different even when they have the same basic buttons. Compare the position of the analogue sticks, the shape of the D-pad and the spacing of face buttons if you play platformers, fighting games or shooters.
Triggers and bumpers matter too. Smooth analogue triggers can feel better for driving and action games, while crisp shoulder buttons may suit faster inputs.
For longer sessions, grip shape, weight and texture are just as important as the feature list. A compact pad may suit smaller hands or travel, while a fuller shape may feel more stable for extended play.
Some gamepads add remappable buttons, trigger stops, swappable sticks or profiles. These can be helpful, but only if they support the way you actually play.
A gamepad is the most versatile choice for many genres, but it is not always the most specialised. Racing games may feel more immersive with wheels and pedals, while flight simulators may benefit from sticks, throttles or yokes.
If you are unsure, compare gamepads with the wider game controller range so you can decide whether a general-purpose pad or a more dedicated control setup makes sense.
