Front Mowers: Your essential buying guide
A front mower is well suited to shaped lawns, landscaped gardens and areas with trees, beds, paths or tight edges. The front-mounted deck gives a clearer view of the cutting area, which can make it easier to mow accurately around obstacles.
A front mower has its cutting deck ahead of the driver, while many lawn tractors position the deck beneath the operator. Front mowers are often chosen for visibility and manoeuvrability, whereas lawn tractors may appeal where a more conventional ride-on layout is preferred.
Choose a deck width that suits both your lawn size and access points. Wider decks can cover open grass more quickly, but they may be harder to manoeuvre through narrow gateways, around tight planting or into storage areas.
Collecting can leave a tidier finish where clippings need to be removed, mulching finely cuts grass and returns it to the lawn, and discharge systems can suit longer grass or less formal areas. Check each listing carefully, as some front mowers may support more than one cutting method with the right set-up.
Check the overall width, turning ability, cutting height adjustment, deck access for cleaning, fuel or battery requirements, seat comfort, control layout and storage space. It is also worth checking whether the mower suits slopes or uneven ground if your garden is not flat.
Front mowers are a specialist type of ride-on mower, so it is worth comparing them on more than cutting width alone. Visibility, steering, deck access and clipping management can all affect how practical a machine feels in everyday use.
Front mowers are particularly useful where precision matters. If your lawn has curved borders, trees, raised beds, garden features or awkward corners, the forward deck position can help you see exactly where the blades are working.
For large open lawns, compare the front mower’s deck width and ground speed against how often you mow. For more complex gardens, prioritise manoeuvrability, turning circle and how easily the machine reaches under shrubs or close to edges.
Measure gateways, paths, shed doors and storage spaces before comparing listings. A front mower may be easy to steer on grass but still too wide for a side passage or too long for a compact garage.
Look at both the cutting deck width and the overall machine dimensions where available. The deck position can make the mower feel different to park and store compared with other ride-on layouts.
Some front mowers use articulated steering, while others use different steering arrangements. Articulation can help the rear of the machine follow the front more closely, which may be useful around borders and obstacles.
When comparing options, think about the parts of your garden that are hardest to mow rather than just the largest area. Tight turns, planted edges and narrow routes between sections can make steering design more important than raw power.
Front mowers may be set up for collecting, mulching, rear discharge or side discharge depending on the model and accessories. The best choice depends on the finish you want and how often you mow.
Mulching can be convenient for regular cutting because clippings are finely chopped and returned to the lawn. Collection may suit formal lawns where a clean finish is important, while discharge can be practical for longer grass or less manicured areas.
For larger gardens, seat comfort, control placement and vibration levels can make a noticeable difference. Compare the driving position, ease of adjusting cutting height and whether the controls look straightforward for regular use.
Maintenance access is also important. Check how easily the deck can be cleaned, whether belts and blades are accessible, and what routine servicing the engine or power system may need.
