NARS Foundations: Your essential buying guide
Start by identifying your depth, such as fair, light, medium, tan or deep, then consider your undertone: cool, warm, neutral or olive. Compare shade descriptions and product images where available, and look for ranges that offer clear undertone guidance rather than relying on shade names alone.
Choose sheer or light coverage if you want a natural, barely-there base, medium coverage for everyday evening-out, and full coverage for a more perfected finish. Buildable foundations can be useful if you like adjusting coverage depending on the occasion.
Matte foundations are often chosen for oily or shine-prone skin, while dewy and radiant finishes can suit dry or dull-looking skin. Satin and natural finishes are versatile options if you want balance without looking too flat or too glowy.
Liquid foundations are popular for blending and shade variety, sticks are convenient for targeted application and travel, creams can offer a richer feel, and powders are useful for quick application or a softer matte effect. The best format depends on your preferred application style and finish.
Primer can help prepare the skin and influence how foundation sits, while powder can reduce shine or help set areas that crease or move. You do not always need both; choose them based on your skin type, the foundation formula and the finish you want.
Foundation is one of the most personal makeup purchases because the right choice depends on shade, undertone, coverage, finish and how the formula works with your skin. Use ShopSmarty to compare options across the Cosmetics category and refine what suits your everyday routine.
A good foundation match should blend into your skin rather than sit noticeably lighter, darker, pinker or yellower. Alongside shade depth, check whether the formula is described as cool, warm, neutral or olive, as undertone can make a big difference to the final look.
If you are between shades, consider how you normally wear your base. Some shoppers prefer a slightly lighter shade they can warm up with bronzer, while others choose a closer match to the neck for a seamless everyday finish.
Sheer and light-coverage foundations are suited to a fresh, natural look where skin still shows through. Medium coverage can help even tone while remaining flexible for daily wear.
Fuller-coverage foundations are designed for a more perfected base, but texture, finish and blendability still matter. If you like changing your look, a buildable formula may be more versatile than a fixed high-coverage base.
Matte, satin, natural, radiant and dewy finishes all create different effects. Matte formulas can reduce the look of shine, while radiant finishes can make the complexion appear fresher or more luminous.
Skin feel is just as important as appearance. If you dislike heavier makeup, look for lightweight or breathable descriptions; if you want a more substantial base, creamier textures may feel more comfortable.
Liquid foundation is a common choice for blending over larger areas and comes in many finishes. Stick foundation can be useful for quick application, touch-ups or focused coverage, while cream foundations often appeal to shoppers who prefer a richer texture.
Powder foundation offers a different approach, especially for those who want a quick matte base or prefer applying makeup with a brush. Consider how much time you spend on your routine and which tools you already use.
Foundation often works best when chosen alongside the rest of your base products. Face primers can affect grip and smoothness, concealers can add targeted coverage, and powders or setting sprays can help refine the final finish.
Nearby cosmetics categories such as BB creams, CC creams and concealers may be worth comparing if you want lighter coverage, colour correction or extra coverage only in certain areas rather than a full foundation step.
