Smeg Food Mixers: Your essential buying guide
For occasional cakes, batters and small batches, a compact mixer with a smaller bowl may be enough. If you regularly make bread dough, larger cakes or family-sized batches, look for a bigger bowl capacity and a stable base that can handle heavier mixes.
Common attachments include a flat beater for cake mixtures, a whisk for cream and egg whites, and a dough hook for bread or pizza dough. Some models may also support optional accessories, so check what is included and what can be added separately.
Motor power can matter, especially for heavy doughs or frequent use, but it is not the only factor. Bowl design, mixing action, speed control and build stability all affect how well a mixer copes with different recipes.
Many stand-style food mixers are designed to knead dough when used with a dough hook. If bread making is a priority, compare bowl size, dough capacity guidance, speed settings and whether the mixer feels robust enough for heavier mixtures.
A food mixer is usually better for hands-free mixing, larger batches and heavier doughs, while a hand mixer is lighter, easier to store and useful for quick whisking or beating. Choose based on how often you bake, how much space you have and the type of recipes you make most.
A good food mixer can make baking and prep feel easier by taking care of whisking, beating and kneading. The right choice depends on the quantities you make, the recipes you enjoy and how much space you can spare in the kitchen.
If you bake occasionally, a straightforward mixer with essential attachments and a manageable bowl size may be all you need. For regular bakers, it is worth comparing sturdier models with more speed control, larger bowls and attachments that suit a wider range of recipes.
Think about your usual tasks before choosing. Cake batter, cookie dough, meringues and bread dough all place different demands on a mixer, so prioritise the features that support what you cook most often.
Bowl capacity affects how much mixture you can make in one go, but bigger is not always better. A very large bowl may be less convenient for small quantities, while a smaller one can be limiting if you regularly bake in batches.
Also compare the mixer’s footprint and height, especially if it will sit under wall cupboards. Heavier mixers can feel more stable during kneading, but they may be less convenient to move in and out of storage.
Multiple speed settings help you move from gentle folding to fast whisking with better control. A slow-start option can be useful for reducing flour clouds and splashes when adding dry ingredients or liquids.
Look for controls that feel easy to use and settings that suit your recipes. For doughs, steady lower speeds are often important, while whisking cream or egg whites benefits from higher-speed options.
Most food mixers include a beater, whisk and dough hook, but the design and material can vary. Check whether the attachments are suited to the recipes you plan to make and whether they are easy to fit, remove and clean.
Some mixers can work with extra accessories for other kitchen tasks. If that flexibility matters, compare compatibility carefully rather than assuming every model supports the same add-ons.
A food mixer is more likely to be used regularly if it is simple to set up and clean. Removable bowls, splash guards and easy-access attachments can make a noticeable difference when baking often.
Check care instructions for bowls and tools, particularly if you prefer dishwasher-safe parts. Cable storage, tilt-head or bowl-lift design, and the ease of adding ingredients while mixing are also worth comparing.
