Floor, Wall & Roofs: Your essential buying guide
Compare the intended mounting location, panel size, output rating, frame type, fixing method and whether a mounting kit or controller is included. Also check that the panel is suitable for the surface and angle you plan to use.
They can be. Roof-mounted panels usually need compatible roof fixings and suitable weatherproof installation, while wall or floor-positioned panels may use brackets, stands or frames. The best choice depends on available space, sunlight exposure and how permanent you want the setup to be.
In many cases, yes. Some products include brackets, rails or stands, while others require separate mounting hardware. Check the product details carefully so you know whether the fixings are suitable for your roof, wall or floor surface.
Some small panels and portable or low-voltage kits may be designed for DIY use, but roof-mounted or mains-connected systems can involve structural and electrical work. If you are unsure, use a qualified installer and follow UK safety guidance.
Look for a location with good daylight exposure, limited shading and a secure fixing surface. The angle and orientation can affect performance, so compare products with your available space and installation constraints in mind.
Choosing between floor, wall and roof solar panels is mainly about matching the panel and mounting method to your space. The right option should fit securely, receive enough sunlight and work with the electrical setup or kit you plan to use.
Decide whether the panel will sit on a roof, mount to a wall, or be positioned on a floor or ground-level frame. Each location has different practical requirements, from roof fixings and weather exposure to wall brackets or freestanding supports.
For roof use, check the roof type and whether the fixing system is compatible. For walls and floors, consider stability, angle adjustment and how exposed the panel will be to wind, rain and accidental knocks.
Compare the panel dimensions with the space available before looking at output. A larger panel is not always the easiest choice if access, mounting points or shading make installation awkward.
Look closely at what is included. Some products may be a single panel only, while others may include brackets, cables, controllers or other components. This helps you compare like for like rather than assuming every listing is a complete solar setup.
The fixing method should suit the surface you are using. Roofs, brick walls, timber structures and flat floor areas all need different approaches, and unsuitable fixings can make the installation unsafe or ineffective.
If a product does not clearly state that it suits your intended surface, compare alternatives or seek professional advice before buying. This is especially important for permanent roof or wall installations.
Solar panels work best when positioned where they can receive consistent daylight. Nearby trees, chimneys, roof features, fences or buildings can create shade that affects how useful a location will be.
Also think about access for cleaning, inspection and maintenance. A hard-to-reach roof position may be suitable for a permanent system, while a floor or wall option may be easier to adjust or move depending on the product design.
Before comparing final options, check whether the panel is part of a low-voltage kit, a battery-charging setup, or a wider solar system. The electrical requirements can influence which accessories and professional support you need.
For mains-connected or more complex installations, use a qualified professional. DIY comparison is useful for understanding your options, but safety, compliance and correct installation should guide the final decision.
