Dermalogica Face Cleansers: Your essential buying guide
For oily or combination skin, gel and foaming cleansers can feel fresh and lightweight. Dry or sensitive skin may prefer cream, milk, balm or oil cleansers that feel more cushioning. If your skin is easily unsettled, look for simple, fragrance-free options and avoid over-cleansing.
Gel cleansers usually have a light texture and often rinse away cleanly, making them popular for a fresh feel. Cream cleansers are richer and can feel more comforting, especially if your skin feels tight after washing. The best choice depends on how your skin feels after cleansing, not just how it looks before.
You may prefer a balm, oil or micellar-style cleanser as a first step for make-up and SPF, followed by a gentle face wash if you like a double cleanse. Some everyday cleansers are designed for one-step use, but heavier make-up or water-resistant SPF can need more thorough removal.
Many shoppers cleanse in the evening to remove daily build-up, make-up and SPF, then use either a gentle cleanse or just water in the morning depending on their skin. If cleansing twice daily leaves your skin tight, dry or uncomfortable, consider a milder formula or reducing frequency.
Hydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid can be useful if your skin feels dry, while salicylic acid may suit some blemish-prone routines. Ceramides, oat and other soothing ingredients can appeal to sensitive-feeling skin. Since cleanser is rinsed off, focus on comfort, texture and how your skin feels afterwards.
A good face cleanser should fit easily into your routine, remove what you need it to remove, and leave your skin feeling comfortable. Use texture, skin type, cleansing step and ingredient preferences to narrow down the options.
Gel and foaming cleansers are often chosen for a clean, fresh feel, especially by shoppers who dislike residue. Cream and milk cleansers tend to feel softer and more nourishing on the skin.
Balms and oils are useful when you want a richer cleanse, particularly for make-up, sunscreen or a massage-style first cleanse. Micellar-style cleansers can be practical for quick removal, travel or low-effort routines.
If your skin feels dry or tight after washing, compare gentle, non-stripping formulas and look for hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients. If you are prone to shine or congestion, lightweight gels or formulas with targeted actives may suit your routine better.
Sensitive-feeling skin often benefits from simpler formulas, especially fragrance-free options. Patch testing a new cleanser can be sensible if your skin reacts easily.
A morning cleanse is usually about refreshing the skin, so a mild formula is often enough. In the evening, you may want something more effective at removing make-up, SPF and daily build-up.
Double cleansing usually means using an oil or balm cleanser first, then following with a water-based cleanser. It is optional, but can be helpful if one cleanser does not leave your skin feeling properly clean.
Pump bottles and tubes are convenient for showers and sinks, while tubs of balm can feel more ritual-led. Travel sizes can be useful if you want to test a formula before committing to a full-size product.
Fragrance can make cleansing feel more luxurious, but it is not essential. If your skin is reactive, compare fragrance-free or low-fragrance options and avoid pairing too many strong active products in the same routine.
