Smeg Espresso Machines: Your essential buying guide
For most homes, a pump espresso machine offers a good balance of control, consistency and size. Manual and semi-automatic models suit shoppers who want to adjust grind, dose and extraction, while simpler automatic options are better if you want less hands-on preparation.
If the machine does not include a grinder, you will usually need either a separate grinder capable of a fine espresso grind or suitable pre-ground coffee. Freshly ground beans give more control, but they also add cost, counter space and an extra cleaning step.
A steam wand is useful if you regularly make cappuccinos, flat whites or lattes, as it lets you heat and texture milk. If you mainly drink espresso or americano-style coffee, a machine without a steam wand may be simpler and more compact.
Compare the machine size, water tank capacity, portafilter type, milk frothing options, cup clearance, heating time, pressure system, cleaning programme and whether parts are removable. These features affect everyday ease of use as much as the coffee-making result.
Cleaning varies by model. Machines with removable drip trays, water tanks and used-coffee areas are easier to maintain, while steam wands and portafilters need regular rinsing. Some models include descaling alerts or automatic cleaning cycles, which can make upkeep simpler.
Espresso machines can look similar at first glance, but the best choice depends on how involved you want to be, what drinks you make most often and how much space you have. Use the guide below to compare practical features before you shortlist sale finds.
Manual and semi-automatic espresso machines give you more influence over the drink, including how much coffee you use, how long the shot runs and how the milk is steamed. They suit shoppers who enjoy experimenting and do not mind a little practice.
More automated machines reduce the steps involved, which can be helpful for busy kitchens. When comparing, think honestly about whether you want a hobby-style coffee setup or a straightforward appliance for reliable daily use.
Espresso needs a fine, consistent grind, so check whether the machine includes a grinder or relies on a separate one. A built-in grinder can save space, while a separate grinder gives more flexibility if you already have coffee equipment.
Also look at whether the machine uses standard ground coffee, specific baskets or pressurised portafilters. These details can affect how easy the machine is for beginners and how much control experienced users have.
If you make lattes, cappuccinos or flat whites, pay close attention to the milk system. A traditional steam wand offers control over texture, while assisted frothing systems can be easier for everyday use.
Consider where the steam wand sits, whether there is enough clearance for your milk jug and how easy the wand is to wipe down after use. For espresso-only drinkers, skipping complex milk features can keep the machine simpler.
Espresso machines vary widely in width, height and depth, so measure your worktop before comparing models. Remember to allow room above the machine for filling the water tank and space in front for removing the drip tray or portafilter.
If the machine will live under wall cupboards, check the position of the water tank and bean hopper, where relevant. A compact design is only useful if you can still access the parts you use every day.
Regular cleaning helps keep an espresso machine working properly. Look for removable drip trays, accessible water tanks, clear descaling prompts and easy-to-rinse components.
Machines with milk systems need extra attention, as dried milk can build up quickly. If you want low-effort ownership, prioritise simple parts and visible maintenance alerts over more complicated features you may not use.
An espresso machine is best if you want concentrated coffee and the option to make café-style drinks. If you prefer filter-style coffee, stove-top brewing or a more convenient capsule routine, it may be worth comparing the wider coffee maker category before deciding.
Looking across coffee makers can help you decide whether an espresso setup fits your habits, or whether a different brewing method would suit your kitchen, time and taste better.
