Ping Drivers: Your essential buying guide
Driver loft affects launch, spin and carry. Slower swing speeds often benefit from higher lofts for easier launch, while faster players may prefer lower lofts to control spin. Adjustable drivers can help you fine-tune loft as your swing or course conditions change.
Shaft flex should match your swing speed and tempo. Regular flex can suit many moderate swing speeds, stiff flex is often preferred by faster swingers, and senior or ladies flex options can help players who need more launch and easier clubhead release.
Adjustable drivers are useful if you want to alter loft, face angle or weighting to influence launch and shot shape. They can be especially helpful for golfers who are still refining their swing or who want one club that can be tuned over time.
Forgiveness describes how well a driver maintains distance and direction on off-centre strikes. Larger, more stable heads and higher MOI designs can help reduce the penalty from mishits, which is useful for golfers who do not always find the middle of the face.
Many beginners still benefit from a forgiving driver with enough loft, as it is designed for tee shots and has a large face. However, some players may find a fairway wood easier to control, so it depends on confidence, strike consistency and the type of courses you play.
A driver is often the longest club in the bag, but the best choice is not just about distance. Focus on launch, forgiveness, shaft fit and adjustability so the club supports your natural swing rather than fighting it.
Loft is one of the biggest influences on how a driver performs. More loft can help get the ball airborne and improve carry, while lower loft can suit golfers who already launch the ball high or create too much spin.
If you are unsure, look for models with adjustable hosels. These allow small loft and lie changes, giving you room to experiment as your swing develops.
Forgiving drivers are designed to keep ball speed and direction more consistent when you strike the heel or toe. Features such as larger head profiles, perimeter weighting and high-stability construction can make tee shots feel less punishing.
Golfers who want help reducing slices or improving launch may also want to compare draw-biased designs and weight settings.
The shaft affects timing, launch and control. A shaft that is too stiff can feel hard to release, while one that is too soft may feel unstable through impact.
Compare flex, weight and shaft material when browsing drivers. Lighter shafts can help some golfers create speed, while heavier shafts may suit players who prefer a more controlled feel.
Some drivers include movable weights, adjustable loft sleeves or settings designed to influence fade and draw bias. These features are helpful if you like to fine-tune ball flight or want flexibility for different course layouts.
If you prefer a simpler set-up, a fixed-head driver can still be a strong choice, particularly if the loft and shaft already suit your swing.
When comparing drivers, check the loft, shaft flex, handedness, head size, adjustability and whether the model is aimed at distance, forgiveness or lower spin. Small specification differences can make a noticeable difference from the tee.
