Detectors: Your essential buying guide
For general drilling, a multi-detector is often the most practical choice because it can help check for more than one hidden hazard, such as live wires, metal fixings, pipes or timber studs. If your task is very specific, a dedicated stud, metal or voltage detector may be enough.
Many detectors include live wire detection, but you should check the product specification carefully. Detection can be affected by wall material, cable depth and whether the circuit is energised, so always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use safe working practices.
Detection depth indicates how far beneath the surface the detector is designed to sense a material. Different materials are usually detected at different depths, so compare the stated figures for timber, metal and live wiring rather than relying on a single maximum depth.
Not always. A stud detector is usually focused on finding timber or metal studs behind plasterboard, while a wall scanner or multi-detector may also look for metal, pipes and live electrical cables. Check the detection modes to make sure the tool suits your wall type and project.
Clear visual indicators, audible alerts, automatic calibration, a comfortable grip and simple mode selection are useful for most DIY tasks. A backlit screen can also help in dim areas, while centre-finding features can make fixing shelves, cabinets or brackets more accurate.
Detectors are designed to reduce guesswork before drilling, cutting or fixing into surfaces. The right choice depends on what you need to locate, the materials in your home and how often you expect to use the tool.
Start with the hazard or material you most need to find. Stud detectors are useful for locating fixing points behind plasterboard, while metal detectors can help identify pipework, screws, nails or reinforcement.
For mixed DIY jobs, a multi-detector may be more convenient because it combines several detection modes in one tool. This can be useful when you are fitting shelves, hanging cabinets, mounting TVs or working near sockets and switches.
Compare detection depth by material, as a detector may read deeper for metal than for timber or live wiring. If you are working on older walls, dense plaster, tiles or masonry, check whether the detector is suitable for those surfaces.
Surface condition also matters. Uneven, damp or foil-backed materials can affect readings, so allow time to calibrate the detector correctly and make several passes over the area before marking drill points.
A good detector should make results easy to understand. Look for clear display bars, directional guidance, centre markers or audible tones that help you interpret what the tool has found.
Simple controls are especially useful if you only use the detector occasionally. Automatic calibration and clearly labelled modes can reduce set-up time and help avoid switching to the wrong scan setting.
Most DIY detectors are compact handheld tools, but grip shape, screen position and button layout can still make a difference during careful scanning. A lightweight design can be easier to hold steady against walls and ceilings.
Check the required battery type or charging method before buying, particularly if the detector will be kept in a toolbox for occasional use. A low-battery indicator is helpful because weak power can affect reliability on some tools.
A detector is a guide, not a guarantee. Mark readings lightly, scan from more than one direction and avoid drilling directly where the tool indicates a possible cable or pipe.
If the job involves uncertain wiring, plumbing or structural work, pause and investigate further before cutting or drilling. For broader project planning, it can also help to compare the other tools and machines needed for the task alongside your detector.
