Faber-CastellFaber-Castell Coloured Pencils: Your essential buying guide
Consider the number of colours, how smoothly the pencils lay down pigment, whether the leads are soft or firm, and how comfortable the barrels are to hold. For detailed drawing, a firmer point can help with precision; for colouring and blending, softer leads may feel smoother.
Yes, coloured pencils are a practical choice for many children’s craft, colouring and school activities. For younger users, look for sturdy pencils, easy-grip barrels and sets with a manageable colour range. Always check any age guidance shown on the product listing.
A smaller set can be enough for everyday colouring, homework and simple craft projects. Larger sets give more shades for blending, skin tones, landscapes and layered artwork, which can be useful for hobby artists or anyone who wants more creative flexibility.
Traditional coloured pencils are designed for dry colouring and drawing. Aquarelle pencils are water-soluble, so they can be used dry or blended with water for watercolour-style effects. If you want clean, controlled colouring, choose coloured pencils; if you want painterly washes, aquarelle pencils may be worth comparing separately.
Coloured pencils usually work well on drawing paper, sketch pads and many craft papers. Smoother paper helps with fine detail, while paper with more texture can hold more pigment for layered colour. Very thin paper may show pressure marks or become dented with heavy colouring.
Coloured pencils vary more than they first appear. The right set depends on who will use them, the type of artwork or craft project, and whether colour variety, durability or fine control matters most.
Small coloured pencil sets are useful for everyday colouring, travel craft kits and quick creative activities. They keep choices simple and are often easier for children to manage.
Larger sets offer more shades for blending and layering. They are a better fit if the user wants subtle colour differences for portraits, nature drawings, adult colouring books or more detailed hobby work.
Softer coloured pencils tend to feel smoother and can build rich colour with less pressure. They are useful for shading, blending and filling larger areas.
Firmer pencils can hold a sharper point for longer, which helps with outlines, small details and neat colouring. If the pencils are mainly for school or craft use, durability and easy sharpening may be just as important as colour intensity.
For children, look for practical features such as strong leads, comfortable barrels and clear colour selection. Chunkier or triangular barrels may be easier for some younger users to grip.
For teens, students and hobby artists, compare pigment strength, blendability and the variety of tones in the set. A balanced mix of bright colours, neutrals and natural shades gives more flexibility across different projects.
Coloured pencils are ideal when you want controlled, low-mess colour. If the project needs bolder blocks of colour, markers may be worth comparing; for waxy, broad colouring, crayons can be more suitable.
For watercolour-style effects, aquarelle pencils are a related option, but they behave differently once water is added. Keep classic coloured pencils in mind when the priority is dry drawing, tidy colouring and easy layering.
Paper texture affects how coloured pencils look and feel. Smooth paper supports fine detail, while textured paper can grip more colour for layered effects.
If you are building a wider craft kit, compare coloured pencils alongside suitable paper, sketch pads and other arts and crafts essentials so the materials work well together.
