Kamado Joe Charcoal BBQs: Your essential buying guide
Start with the size of cooking area you need, then check how well the BBQ lets you manage airflow and heat. A lid, adjustable vents, sturdy grates and practical ash collection can all make a difference to everyday use.
Think about how many people you usually cook for and how much space you have outside. A smaller BBQ may suit occasional use or compact patios, while a larger cooking area is better for family meals and entertaining.
Yes, many shoppers start with charcoal because it is simple in concept and offers a traditional barbecue experience. If you are new to it, look for a design that is easy to light, easy to adjust and straightforward to clean after cooking.
Ventilation is the key feature to check, along with a lid if you want more control over cooking conditions. Some charcoal BBQs also make it easier to create hotter and cooler zones, which helps when cooking different foods at the same time.
Choose a model with accessible ash removal and surfaces that are simple to wipe down after use. Removable components and a practical grate design can make regular cleaning less time-consuming.
Charcoal BBQs suit shoppers who want a traditional barbecue setup and enjoy having more direct control over the cooking process. The best choice depends on how often you use it, how many people you cook for and how much space you have available outdoors.
The right cooking area depends on whether you are grilling for two, a small family or a larger group. It is usually better to choose a BBQ that fits your usual entertaining style rather than one that is unnecessarily large for your space.
Charcoal BBQs are valued for the way they let you work with temperature through airflow and fuel placement. Adjustable vents and a lid can help you manage different foods more confidently, especially if you want more than straightforward direct grilling.
Ash removal, grate access and easy-wipe surfaces all make a charcoal BBQ more convenient to live with. If you plan to use it often, it is worth checking how simple it is to clear out residue and get it ready for the next cook.
Within the wider BBQ range, shoppers often compare charcoal against gas, electric, pellet, dual fuel, kettle, smoker and wood fire options. Charcoal is a strong fit if you want a familiar outdoor cooking experience with a focus on flavour and hands-on control, while other formats may appeal if you prioritise different cooking styles or setup preferences.
