The RugsCarpets: Your essential buying guide
For hallways, stairs and busy living spaces, look for carpets described as hard-wearing, dense or suitable for heavy domestic use. Shorter piles and loop constructions can be practical choices because they are generally less prone to flattening than very deep, plush styles.
Bedrooms often suit softer carpets with a warmer, more luxurious feel underfoot. Saxony, velvet-style and thicker cut-pile carpets can work well where comfort is more important than coping with constant foot traffic.
Consider the room size, light levels and the furniture you already own. Pale neutrals can make a room feel brighter, mid-tones are often more forgiving day to day, and darker shades can create a cosier look but may show lint or pet hair more clearly.
Pile refers to the carpet fibres and how they are finished. Cut pile tends to feel softer, loop pile can be more textured and practical, and deep pile offers extra comfort but may need more regular care to keep it looking even.
Yes. Underlay can affect how a carpet feels, how it wears and how much warmth or cushioning it adds. Check whether the carpet you are considering is suitable for your intended underlay and room type.

Carpet changes both the comfort and the character of a room, so it is worth comparing more than colour alone. Use the sections below to focus on the practical details that affect everyday wear, softness and style.
Start with where the carpet will be fitted. Living rooms need a balance of comfort and resilience, bedrooms can prioritise softness, while stairs and hallways usually need a tougher surface that can cope with repeated footfall.
If the space is used by children or pets, look for easy-care descriptions and finishes designed for regular use. For quieter rooms, you may be able to choose a deeper or more luxurious pile.
Cut-pile carpets often feel soft and smooth, making them popular for bedrooms and lounges. Loop-pile carpets have a more textured appearance and can be a practical option for areas where durability matters.
Deep-pile carpets can feel cosy underfoot, but they may show footprints or vacuum marks more noticeably. Shorter, denser piles are often easier to maintain in busy homes.
Neutral carpets are versatile and easy to pair with different furniture styles, while warmer tones can make a room feel more inviting. Grey, beige and taupe shades remain practical choices because they work with a wide range of interiors.
Think about natural light and how often the room is used. Very light carpets can brighten a space but may need more care, while patterned or flecked finishes can help disguise everyday marks.
A carpet’s feel is influenced by both the pile and the underlay beneath it. If comfort is a priority, compare thicker and softer options, but check that they are suitable for the room and expected level of use.
Maintenance matters too. Check cleaning guidance before choosing, especially for family rooms, dining areas or homes with pets. Some carpet types are easier to vacuum and refresh than others.
Once you have narrowed down carpet colour and texture, consider how it will sit alongside sofas, curtains, cushions, throws and wall décor. A calm carpet shade can make bolder furnishings stand out, while a richer carpet can add depth to a simple room scheme.
If you are updating more than the flooring, comparing wider furnishings at the same time can help you build a more cohesive look.
