KitchencraftCake Tins: Your essential buying guide
Choose the size stated in your recipe where possible, as tin diameter and depth affect baking time and cake height. Common round sizes are useful for layered sponge cakes, while square or rectangular tins suit brownies, traybakes and celebration cakes that need clean edges.
A loose-bottom cake tin can make it easier to release delicate sponges and deeper cakes without turning them upside down. It is especially useful for decorated cakes, but you should still grease and line the tin carefully to help prevent sticking or leakage.
Cake tins are usually solid-sided or loose-bottomed tins used for sponges, fruit cakes and traybakes. Springform tins have a side clasp that releases the ring, which can be helpful for cheesecakes or fragile bakes, but they are a separate style to compare if your recipe specifically calls for one.
Non-stick cake tins can make release and cleaning easier, particularly for regular baking. They still benefit from greasing and lining, and you should check care instructions, as some coatings are better suited to hand washing and non-metal utensils.
Shallow tins are useful for sandwich cakes and even layers, while deeper tins suit fruit cakes, celebration cakes and taller sponges. Always allow space for the cake to rise, and avoid overfilling the tin unless the recipe advises it.
Cake tins look simple, but small differences in shape, depth and construction can change how a cake bakes and releases. Use this guide to compare the features that matter for your favourite recipes.
Round cake tins are a popular choice for sandwich cakes, birthday cakes and stacked layers. If you bake the same cake regularly, matching pairs can help create even layers without splitting a single sponge.
Square and rectangular cake tins are practical for traybakes, brownies, loaf-style slices and celebration cakes with straight edges. They can also make portioning easier when you want neat, consistent servings.
Tin size affects both baking time and texture. A wider tin can produce a shallower cake that bakes faster, while a smaller or deeper tin can need longer and may brown differently.
If you often follow UK recipes, compare measurements carefully and look for both diameter and depth where listed. This is particularly important for deep cakes, rich fruit cakes and layered celebration bakes.
Fixed-base cake tins are straightforward and can be a good choice for runnier batters when properly lined. Loose-bottom tins help with lifting out sponges and deeper cakes while keeping the sides neat.
If you are baking cheesecakes or very delicate desserts, you may also want to compare nearby springform options, as the clasped side can make removal easier for certain recipes.
Metal cake tins are common because they heat efficiently and are available in many shapes and sizes. Heavier-gauge tins can feel sturdier and may be less prone to warping, while lighter tins can be easier to handle.
Non-stick finishes can help with release, but they still need sensible care. Avoid cutting directly in the tin unless the product information says it is suitable, and check whether the tin is dishwasher-safe or best washed by hand.
Even a good cake tin works best when prepared properly. Greasing, flouring or lining with baking parchment can help protect the cake surface and make removal smoother.
If cupboard space is limited, compare whether tins nest neatly or whether deep tins will take up more room. Regular bakers may find it useful to keep a small set of core sizes rather than relying on one tin for every recipe.
