Ohs Bedside Tables: Your essential buying guide
A bedside table usually works best when it sits close to the height of your mattress, so items are easy to reach from bed. If it is much lower, lamps and drinks can feel awkward to access; if it is much higher, it may look out of proportion beside the bed.
Choose drawers if you want to hide chargers, medication, glasses or bedtime clutter. Open shelves are useful for books, baskets and decorative items, and can make a small room feel less boxed in. Some bedside tables combine both for a balance of display and concealed storage.
Measure the space beside the bed, allowing room for doors, drawers and walking space. Narrow bedside tables, wall-mounted designs or compact one-drawer styles can help keep essentials close without overwhelming a smaller bedroom.
They do not have to match exactly. A coordinated finish can create a calm, fitted look, while a contrasting colour, texture or material can add interest. Try to keep at least one element consistent, such as wood tone, handle colour or overall style.
A pair can make a double or king-size bed look balanced and gives both sleepers storage. A single bedside table may be better for a guest room, a bed placed against a wall or a smaller bedroom where space is limited.
The right bedside table should suit your bed height, storage needs and bedroom style without taking up more space than necessary. Before comparing options, think about what you keep beside the bed each night and how much surface space you need for a lamp, phone, book or drink.
Start by measuring the gap between the bed and wall, wardrobe or door swing. Check both width and depth, as a table that is too deep can make it harder to move around the room.
Height matters too. Aim for a bedside table that is roughly level with the top of your mattress, especially if you will use it for a reading lamp, alarm clock or overnight essentials.
One-drawer bedside tables suit simple storage needs, while two or three drawers are better for keeping more items hidden. If you prefer a lighter look, an open shelf can hold books or baskets without making the bedside area feel bulky.
Consider what you actually use at night. If you charge devices, store skincare, keep reading glasses nearby or want to hide cables, enclosed storage may be the most practical choice.
Bedside tables can match your wider bedroom furniture for a cohesive look, or contrast with it for a more styled feel. Painted finishes, natural wood effects, mirrored designs and metal frames all create different moods.
If you are refreshing more than just the bedside area, comparing other bedroom furniture can help you keep proportions, finishes and storage levels consistent across the room.
Matching bedside tables on both sides of the bed can make the room feel balanced, particularly with a double, king or super king bed. For smaller rooms, a single table may leave more walking space and still provide the storage you need.
If two sleepers have different habits, the tables do not have to be identical. One side may need drawers and a larger top, while the other may only need a slim table for a lamp and phone.
Bedside tables are best for everyday essentials rather than bulk storage. If you are trying to store clothing, bedding or accessories, you may get a tidier result by pairing a smaller bedside table with larger storage elsewhere in the bedroom.
For rooms that feel cluttered, compare bedside options alongside broader bedroom pieces so you can decide what should live next to the bed and what belongs in dedicated storage.
