Dewalt Angle Grinders: Your essential buying guide
For general DIY cutting and grinding, 115mm and 125mm angle grinders are common choices because they are easier to handle in tighter spaces. Larger disc sizes can offer greater cutting depth and faster material removal, but they are heavier and may be less suitable for fine control. Match the disc size to the material, cut depth and type of work you expect to do most often.
A corded angle grinder is often practical for longer sessions where a mains socket is available, as you do not need to manage battery charge. A cordless angle grinder is useful for jobs away from power, quick site tasks and working outdoors, but you should compare battery platform, capacity and charger compatibility. The best choice depends on where you work and how long each job is likely to take.
Look at disc diameter, motor power or battery voltage, speed control, handle positions, guard adjustment, spindle lock and restart protection. Soft start can make the tool feel more controlled when it powers up, while a slim body and adjustable side handle can improve grip. If you plan to switch between cutting, grinding and sanding, check how easy it is to change discs and guards.
One angle grinder can often be used across different materials, but only with the correct compatible disc for each job. Metal cutting, stone cutting, diamond tile cutting, grinding and flap sanding discs are designed for different applications. Always check the grinder’s disc size, bore size, guard type and the disc manufacturer’s guidance before use.
Choose an angle grinder with a suitable guard, secure auxiliary handle and controls you can operate comfortably. Consider models with safety-focused features such as anti-restart protection, soft start or electronic braking where available. You should also budget for appropriate eye, hand, ear and respiratory protection, and only use discs that are undamaged, correctly rated and fitted for the task.
Angle grinders are versatile but task-dependent tools, so the right model is not only about power. Use ShopSmarty to compare specifications and sale listings side by side, then shortlist options that suit the materials, accessories and working conditions you have in mind.
The disc size affects cutting depth, handling and the type of work an angle grinder is best suited to. Smaller 115mm and 125mm grinders are popular for everyday cutting, trimming, de-rusting and light grinding because they are easier to manoeuvre.
Larger angle grinders can cover heavier cutting and grinding jobs, but the extra size and weight can make them more tiring to use. If you are unsure, think about the thickest material you need to cut and whether precision or depth matters more.
Corded angle grinders suit workshops, garages and longer jobs where constant power is more important than portability. Check the cable length, plug type and whether you will need an extension lead suitable for the environment.
Cordless angle grinders are convenient where sockets are limited or where you want fewer cables around the work area. Compare bare units with kits, battery compatibility, charger inclusion and battery capacity before deciding which listing offers the best fit.
For cutting metal bar, bolts or sheet, prioritise control, guard adjustment and compatible cutting discs. For grinding welds or shaping metal, look for comfortable handle positions and enough power for steady material removal.
For masonry, paving or tiles, check that the grinder can take the correct stone or diamond disc and that the disc size gives enough cutting depth. Dust can be a major consideration on these jobs, so think about protective equipment and whether extraction accessories are relevant.
A good angle grinder should feel secure in both hands. Compare body shape, weight, side-handle positions and switch style, especially if you will be working overhead, close to edges or for longer periods.
Features such as tool-free guard adjustment, spindle lock, soft start, anti-restart protection and electronic braking can make operation more controlled. Not every user needs every feature, but they are worth checking when comparing similar models.
The grinder itself is only part of the setup. Make sure the disc diameter, bore size and maximum speed rating match the tool, and confirm that the guard supplied is suitable for the intended disc type.
If you are comparing angle grinders alongside other finishing or material-removal tools, it can help to browse the wider grinders and polishers area. This keeps angle grinders in context without confusing them with sanders, bench grinders or more specialised grinders.
