Air Purifier: Your essential buying guide
Check the manufacturer’s recommended room size or clean air delivery information and match it to where you plan to use the purifier most. A compact model may suit a bedroom or office, while larger open-plan spaces usually need a higher-capacity unit.
Many shoppers look for a particle filter, often described as HEPA or HEPA-style, for dust, pollen and fine airborne particles. If smells from cooking, pets or smoke are a concern, consider a model with an activated carbon filter as well.
An air purifier may help reduce airborne pollen, pet dander and dust in a room when used correctly, but it is not a medical treatment. For best results, choose a model suited to the room size and keep doors and windows closed while it is running.
Replacement intervals vary by model, usage and indoor air conditions. Check whether the purifier has a filter indicator and factor in the availability and cost of replacement filters before comparing options.
For bedrooms, look for quiet operation, a night mode, dimmable lights and suitable coverage for the room. A timer or auto mode can also be useful if you want the purifier to adjust without constant manual changes.
Choosing an air purifier is easier when you match the specification to your room, routine and the type of airborne particles you want to reduce. Use the sections below to compare practical features before shortlisting models.
Start with the space where the purifier will be used most often. A unit that is too small for the room may need to run harder, while an oversized model can take up more space and use more power than necessary.
Look for room coverage details in square metres, and consider ceiling height and open-plan layouts. If you want to move one purifier between rooms, check the weight, handle design and footprint.
For dust, pollen and pet dander, focus on the main particle filter and how easy it is to replace. Terms can vary between brands, so compare the filter description rather than relying on a single label.
For odours, cooking smells or smoke, a carbon filter can be useful. Some purifiers combine several filter layers, while others use separate replaceable filters, which can affect ongoing maintenance.
Noise level matters if the purifier will run while you sleep, work or watch TV. Compare low-speed and night-mode settings as well as maximum fan output, because the loudest mode is not always needed for daily use.
Auto modes, air quality sensors, timers and child locks can make a purifier easier to live with. If the display is bright, check whether it can be dimmed or turned off for night-time use.
Air purifiers need regular upkeep to perform as intended. Compare replacement filter availability, suggested replacement intervals and whether washable pre-filters are included for larger dust and hair.
A filter-change indicator can be helpful, but it is still worth checking the manual for cleaning steps. Easy-access filter panels are useful if you plan to maintain the unit regularly.
An air purifier is designed for filtering airborne particles and some odours. If your main issue is damp, condensation or excess moisture, a dehumidifier is the more relevant comparison; if the air feels too dry, look at humidifiers instead.
