Winsor & Newton Acrylic Paints: Your essential buying guide
Check the colour range, paint consistency, finish, opacity and pack size. Small tubes are useful for trying colours or building a palette, while larger bottles can suit repeated craft use, backgrounds and bigger projects.
Yes, acrylic paints are a popular choice for beginners because they are straightforward to use, can be thinned with water and dry relatively quickly. Starter sets are often a practical way to experiment with colour mixing before choosing individual shades.
Acrylic paints are commonly used on canvas, paper, card, wood, papier-mâché and many craft blanks. Always check the product details for surface suitability, especially if you are painting plastic, glass, fabric or items that may need sealing.
Heavy body acrylics are thicker and can hold brush marks or textured effects. Fluid acrylics spread more easily and can be better for smoother coverage, pouring-style techniques, fine detail or layering. The best choice depends on your project and preferred painting style.
A topcoat or varnish can help protect finished acrylic work, particularly craft items that may be handled. It can also adjust the final look, such as making the surface glossier or more matt, so choose a finish that matches the result you want.
Acrylic paints are versatile, easy to layer and widely used across arts and crafts projects. Use this guide to compare the main options and choose paints that suit your surface, technique and level of experience.
Acrylic paints are commonly available as tubes, bottles, pots and multi-colour sets. Tubes are convenient for squeezing out controlled amounts, while bottles and pots can be useful for craft sessions, larger coverage areas and repeated use.
If you are starting out, a balanced set with core colours can be a sensible choice. If you already know the shades you use most, comparing individual colours may help you top up your palette more precisely.
Thicker acrylics are suited to visible brush strokes, palette knife work and textured effects. Softer or more fluid paints are easier to spread and can help with washes, fine detail, smooth backgrounds and craft coverage.
Opacity matters too. Some colours cover strongly in one or two layers, while others are more transparent and better for glazing or building depth. Product descriptions often indicate whether a paint is opaque, semi-opaque or transparent.
For canvas painting, look for acrylics that offer the colour intensity and consistency you prefer. For general craft use, consider durability, ease of application and whether the paint is suitable for the material you plan to decorate.
Acrylics differ from nearby paint choices such as water colours, oil paint, tempera paints and chalk paints, so it is worth choosing based on the finish and working time you need. Acrylic paint is often selected when shoppers want quick layering and a flexible craft-friendly finish.
Standard acrylics may dry to matt, satin or gloss finishes depending on the formula. Metallic, pearlescent, fluorescent and glitter effects can add impact to craft projects, decorative pieces and mixed-media work.
If you want a consistent final sheen across several colours, consider whether you will need a separate medium or protective topcoat. This is especially useful when combining different brands, finishes or effects in the same piece.
When comparing acrylic paint sets, look beyond the number of colours. Check the tube or bottle size, whether essential shades are included and whether the set contains useful extras such as white, black, metallics or mixing-friendly primary colours.
A larger set can offer variety for experimenting, while a smaller, well-chosen set may be better for focused projects. For children’s activities, school work or shared craft sessions, also check the product information for age suitability and usage guidance.
