Packing Cubes: Your essential buying guide
Pick a mix of small, medium and large cubes if you want flexibility. Small cubes suit underwear, socks and accessories, medium cubes work well for tops and gym kit, while larger cubes are useful for trousers, jumpers or bulkier clothing. Check the cube dimensions against the inside of your suitcase or cabin bag before choosing.
Compression packing cubes can be useful if you want to reduce the bulk of soft clothing such as T-shirts, knitwear or underwear. They are less suitable for structured garments that crease easily, and they do not reduce weight, so they are best used for organisation and space management rather than packing more than your luggage allowance permits.
For a short break, two or three cubes may be enough: one for tops, one for underwear and one for spare items. For longer trips, family holidays or multi-stop travel, a larger set can help separate outfits, clean and worn clothing, or each traveller’s items.
Mesh panels make it easier to see what is inside and can help clothing air between uses. Solid fabric cubes offer more privacy and may be better for separating shoes, laundry or items you do not want visible when opening your bag. Many shoppers choose a combination depending on what they pack most often.
Packing cubes can help keep clothes from shifting around in transit, which may reduce some creasing. For best results, fold or roll garments neatly, avoid overfilling the cube, and use larger cubes for items that need to lie flatter.
Packing cubes are designed to bring order to the inside of your luggage, making it easier to group items and find what you need without unpacking everything. The best choice depends on how you travel, the size of your bag and whether you prioritise visibility, compression, fabric strength or simple separation.
Start with the bag you use most often. Slim or medium cubes are practical for cabin bags where space is limited, while larger cubes can suit full-size suitcases. If you often swap between different bags, a set with varied dimensions gives you more packing options.
Look at the shape as well as the stated size. Rectangular cubes usually sit neatly alongside each other, while deeper cubes may suit bulkier clothing but can be harder to fit into compact luggage.
Standard packing cubes are ideal for everyday organisation, separating clothing types, outfits or travellers. They are straightforward to pack and unpack, and they help stop smaller items disappearing into the corners of your case.
Compression cubes include an extra zip or panel designed to reduce the volume of soft items. They can be helpful for jumpers, T-shirts and casualwear, but avoid over-compressing delicate or crease-prone clothes.
Mesh panels help you identify contents quickly, while solid panels offer a neater look and more privacy. Handles make cubes easier to lift out of a case, and double zips can make them simpler to open from either side.
If you pack toiletries, swimwear, laundry or shoes alongside clothing, consider cubes or pouches with more robust, easy-wipe or water-resistant fabrics. For shared luggage, colour-coded sets can help each person find their own items faster.
If you like planning outfits, use one cube per day or occasion. If you prefer packing by item type, separate tops, bottoms, underwear and nightwear. Families may find it easier to assign a different colour or cube size to each traveller.
Leave a little space in each cube so clothes are not forced against the zip. A well-packed cube should close smoothly and keep its shape without straining.
