Philips IPL: Your essential buying guide
Start with the device’s suitability guidance for your skin tone and hair colour, as IPL is not suitable for every combination. Then compare intensity levels, flash window sizes, included attachments, power options and any safety features such as skin contact or skin tone sensors.
No. IPL uses broad-spectrum light, while laser devices use a more focused light source. For shoppers, the key point is to compare the manufacturer’s suitability information, treatment areas and usage instructions rather than assuming all light-based hair removal devices work in the same way.
A larger body attachment can be useful for legs and arms, while smaller or precision attachments may help with areas such as the face, bikini line or underarms where suitable. Check that any included attachment matches the areas you actually plan to treat.
Corded IPL devices can be convenient for longer sessions because they do not rely on battery charge. Cordless models may offer more flexibility of movement. Compare this alongside device weight, grip shape and the areas you intend to treat.
Suitability varies by device and by individual. Look for lower intensity settings, skin tone sensing features and clear usage guidance. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, including any advice on patch testing and areas where the device should not be used.
Choosing an IPL device is about matching the handset to your skin, hair type and treatment routine. Use ShopSmarty to compare the practical details that can make at-home IPL easier to use and better suited to your needs.
IPL devices are designed with specific suitability ranges, and not every model is appropriate for every skin tone or hair colour. Before comparing extras, read the suitability guidance carefully and make sure the device is intended for your combination.
If you are unsure, look for models with clear skin tone indicators or built-in sensors, and always follow the brand’s usage instructions.
Think about whether you want to use IPL on larger areas such as legs and arms, or smaller areas such as the underarms, bikini line or face where the device is suitable. A wider treatment window can help cover larger areas, while a smaller precision head can offer more control.
Some IPL sets include multiple attachments, so compare what is in the box rather than looking at the handset alone.
Adjustable intensity levels can help you tailor sessions to different areas and comfort preferences. Some devices offer automatic adjustment, while others let you choose the setting manually.
Useful safety features may include skin contact sensors, skin tone sensors and clear indicator lights. These details can make a device feel more straightforward to use at home.
For regular sessions, small usability details matter. Compare the device shape, weight, button layout, cord length or cordless operation, and whether the flash mode is suited to gliding over larger areas or treating smaller zones.
Also check whether the device has a stated flash capacity or replaceable parts, as this can affect how you compare long-term use.
IPL is often considered by shoppers looking beyond shaving or waxing routines, but it requires following a usage schedule and reading suitability guidance closely. If you prefer quick, occasional hair removal, a different beauty tool may be more appropriate.
Use the broader beauty category only if you want to compare IPL with other personal care and grooming options before narrowing your shortlist.
