Bahco Garden Shears: Your essential buying guide
For hedge trimming, choose long-bladed hedge shears with comfortable handles and enough blade length to create an even finish. Wavy or serrated edges can help grip stems, while straight blades are useful for crisp shaping and lighter growth.
Garden shears are best for leafy growth, soft stems and light woody material. For thicker branches, loppers, secateurs or a garden saw are usually more appropriate, as forcing shears through heavy wood can damage the blades and make cutting unsafe.
Telescopic shears are useful if you need extra reach for taller hedges or wider shrubs. They can reduce the need to stretch, but longer handles may feel heavier, so it is worth balancing reach with comfort and control.
Look at blade length, coating, edge style and adjustment. Non-stick coatings can help reduce sap build-up, tension adjustment lets you fine-tune the cutting action, and sharp carbon or stainless steel blades help produce cleaner cuts.
Check the handle length, grip material, overall weight and shock absorption. If you will be trimming for longer periods, lightweight shears with cushioned grips and bumpers can help reduce hand, wrist and shoulder strain.
Garden shears are designed for controlled cutting and shaping around the garden, especially where neat lines and repeated snips matter. Comparing blade type, handle design and intended use will help you choose shears that suit your hedges, shrubs, lawn edges and general maintenance jobs.
Hedge shears are the classic choice for trimming and shaping hedges, topiary and larger shrubs. Their longer blades help create an even surface across a wider area.
Hand shears and grass shears are better for closer, more detailed work such as tidying lawn edges, cutting around beds or trimming small ornamental plants. If you mainly need to cut individual stems, compare shears with dedicated pruning tools rather than choosing on size alone.
Longer blades cover more area with each cut, which can be useful for hedges and broad shrubs. Shorter blades usually offer better control when shaping smaller plants or working in tight spaces.
Straight blades are suited to neat, precise cutting, while wavy or serrated blades can help hold stems in place as you cut. If your hedges are dense or springy, a gripping blade profile may make trimming easier.
The handle design affects how tiring shears feel in use. Longer handles provide leverage and reach, while shorter handles can feel more manageable for close work.
Soft grips, shock-absorbing bumpers and a well-balanced frame can make a noticeable difference during repeated cutting. If you have a lot of hedging, weight and comfort are just as important as blade size.
Telescopic garden shears extend your reach for taller or deeper hedges, helping you trim more of the plant without constantly moving position. Check that the locking mechanism feels secure and that the shears remain easy to control when extended.
Geared or compound-action shears can increase cutting force, which may help with tougher growth. They are useful for regular garden maintenance, but they are not a substitute for heavier-duty branch-cutting tools.
Sharp, clean blades are essential for tidy cuts and comfortable use. After cutting sappy or damp growth, wipe the blades clean and store the shears somewhere dry.
Adjustable blade tension can help keep the cutting action smooth over time. If you plan to use your shears often, compare models with replaceable parts, robust pivots and blade coatings that help reduce sticking.
