Vans Backpacks: Your essential buying guide
For daily commuting, study or general errands, a small to medium backpack is usually enough for essentials such as a purse, keys, water bottle, lunch and an extra layer. If you regularly carry books, gym kit or tech, look for a larger capacity with organised compartments rather than simply choosing the biggest option.
Look for a padded laptop or tablet section, internal pockets for cables and stationery, a secure front or rear pocket for valuables, and comfortable shoulder straps. A structured back panel can also help the bag feel more stable when it is full.
A waterproof or water-resistant backpack is useful if you walk, cycle or use public transport in unpredictable weather. Check the product details carefully, as water-resistant fabrics may cope with light rain, while fully waterproof designs usually offer better protection for electronics and documents.
Comfort often depends on adjustable padded straps, the shape of the back panel and how the weight is distributed. If you carry heavier items, look for a wider strap design, breathable padding and a layout that keeps the heaviest contents close to your back.
Everyday backpacks are usually designed for commuting, school, work or casual use, with a focus on pockets, style and manageable capacity. Hiking backpacks tend to prioritise outdoor support features such as hip belts, hydration compatibility, weather protection and specialist storage for longer walks.
The right backpack should suit what you carry, where you use it and how long you wear it for. Use ShopSmarty to compare backpack styles and spot sale opportunities across options suited to everyday routines, work, study and travel.
Start with what needs to fit inside the backpack on a normal day. A slim, compact backpack can work well for light essentials, while a medium design is better for lunch, notebooks, an extra layer and small accessories.
If you carry bulkier items, compare dimensions as well as stated capacity. A backpack may look spacious but still be awkward for laptops, folders or shoes if the internal shape is too narrow.
A single main compartment is simple and flexible, but it can make smaller items harder to find. Multiple pockets are useful for separating tech, keys, travel cards, cosmetics and water bottles.
For work, college or commuting, a dedicated padded laptop sleeve can help keep devices separate from the rest of your bag. External bottle pockets and quick-access zipped sections are also practical for busy days.
Backpacks are often worn for longer than other bag styles, so comfort matters. Adjustable padded shoulder straps help you set the fit, while a padded back panel can reduce pressure when the bag is full.
If you tend to carry heavier loads, look for wider straps and a balanced layout. Keeping heavier items close to your back can make the backpack feel more secure and easier to carry.
Fabric, nylon and polyester backpacks are common for everyday use because they are lightweight and versatile. Leather and faux leather styles can look smarter, but may need more care and can feel heavier.
If your backpack will be used outdoors or on a rainy commute, compare water-resistant finishes, coated fabrics and secure zip closures. For frequent use, reinforced bases and strong stitching can be especially useful.
A backpack is ideal when you want hands-free carrying and balanced weight across both shoulders. If you are still deciding between different bag formats, it can help to compare the wider bags category for alternatives such as totes, crossbody bags or duffle styles.
Backpacks sit within accessories, so colour, finish and shape can also be chosen to match your wardrobe as well as your practical needs.
